Before you start

You need to be able to log in to the Shopify admin as the owner or as a staff member allowed to install apps. If you’re not sure, read Before you start.

Install the app

  1. Open the Shopify App Store and search for IFG Reviews.
  2. Open the app’s listing and press Install.

What you’ll see: Shopify shows you what the app will be able to do in your store: work with products and read orders.

  3. Check the list and press Install again to confirm.

What you’ll see: the app opens inside the Shopify admin on the Overview page. At the top there’s the name IFG Reviews with your plan (Free to begin with), and below it the box Steps left: 7 of 7.

From now on you always reopen the app from Shopify Admin › Apps › IFG Reviews. The app’s menu has seven entries: Overview, Reviews, Products, Requests, Settings, Plans, Support.

Note: the app asks Shopify for two permissions only. One to read your catalogue and write the review data onto your products, so your theme can show it (it never changes titles, prices or descriptions). The other to read orders, so it knows who really bought and when to ask for the review. Details are in Installation and setup.

Open the guided setup

  1. On Overview, press Open the guided setup.

What you’ll see: the Guided setup page, with the counter “0 of 7 available steps completed” and seven numbered boxes. Each box has a status label: To do, Done or Needs a look. The blue button is always the one for the step to do now.

You can do the steps in any order. Here we follow them from the top.

Step 1: Installation and language

The box lists the two permissions and explains which customer data the app keeps: only name and email address, never phone number or shipping address.

  1. Open the Admin language menu.
  2. Choose Automatic (Shopify account language) to follow your Shopify account’s language, or pick a specific language.
  3. Press Confirm and continue.

What you’ll see: the green message “Setting saved.” at the top, and step 1 turns Done. If you chose another language, the app switches language straight away.

Tip: this language is only for you, inside the app. The emails and pages your customers see follow the language of their order.

Step 2: Product sync

The app needs to know your products to attach each review to the right one.

  1. In the Product sync box, press Sync the catalogue.

What you’ll see: after a few seconds, “Setting saved.” at the top, a line such as “Read 120 products, updated 120.” and the step turns Done.

You only do this once: every product you create, edit or delete in Shopify reaches the app on its own.

Step 3: Review import

Only needed if you already have reviews in another app or in a file.

  1. In the Review import box, press Go to import.

What you’ll see: the Import page. From here, follow Import and export.

If you have no reviews to import, leave this step as it is and move on: it doesn’t block anything.

Step 4: Collection rules

  1. In the Collection rules box, press Set up the requests.

What you’ll see: the Requests page, with the When to ask section.

  2. In the How long to wait after shipping menu, choose how many days to wait after shipping. If you’re not sure, leave After 7 days.
  3. Press Save at the top of the page.

What you’ll see: your settings stay saved and, back in the guided setup, step 4 is Done, whether requests are on or off. Switching them on is step 7.

Every option on this page is explained in Setting up request emails.

Step 5: Email sender

Here you receive the same email your customers will get, to see what it looks like and who it comes from.

  1. In the Email sender box, press Send yourself the test email.

What you’ll see: the Requests page again. Scroll down to the Email preview section.

  2. Press Send me a test email.

What you’ll see: the green message “Test email sent to …” with your store’s address. The email arrives with “[TEST]” in the subject. Step 5 turns Done.

  3. Open your inbox and check the email. If you can’t find it, look in spam.

Note: the test only goes to your store’s address in Shopify, doesn’t count against your plan’s requests, and you can send at most 5 a day.

Step 6: Theme widget

This is the step that makes reviews appear on your store. It has its own page, Showing reviews on your store, with every block explained. In short:

  1. In the Theme widget box, press Reviews on the product page.

What you’ll see: the theme editor opens in a new tab, with the IFG Reviews — reviews block already added to the product page.

  2. In the theme editor, press Save.
  3. Go back to the app’s tab and press Add the stars to the product page. In the editor, drag the stars under the product title and press Save.
  4. Open a product page on your store and check that the reviews box and the stars are there.
  5. Go back to the app and press I added the block.

What you’ll see: “Setting saved.” and step 6 turns Done.

Warning: nothing changes on your store until you press Save in the theme editor. After Save, the block is visible to every visitor.

Step 7: Activation

This is the switch for emails to your customers. Until you turn it on, the app doesn’t write to any customer, even when orders are shipped.

  1. In the Activation box, read the summary: how many days after shipping, and at what time, the email will go out.
  2. Press Switch requests on.

What you’ll see: “Setting saved.”, the sentence “Requests are on: after every shipped order an email goes to the customer.” and step 7 turns Done.

Warning: from here on the emails go to real customers. Requests come from orders shipped after you switch on, not from those shipped before. To stop them, press Switch requests off: the ones already scheduled are cancelled and don’t restart, even if you switch back on.

End of the setup

When every step is Done, the box on Overview becomes The step that is left and Active appears next to the app’s name.

If something goes wrong

I pressed “Sync the catalogue” but a yellow notice appears. Your catalogue is larger than the app reads in one go. What it read is fine: press Sync again until the notice goes away. Until then the step stays Needs a look.

“The catalogue sync did not finish” appears. Wait a minute and press the button again. If it keeps happening, write to us from the Support page.

The test email won’t send. Read the red message: if it says your store has no email address, add one in your store settings in Shopify. If it says sending isn’t configured, that’s on our side: write to us. More cases in When something goes wrong.

Step 3 stays “To do”. That’s normal if you haven’t imported anything. It only completes after a real import.
