Before you start

Convert a single image first: it’s the simplest way to see what the app does before moving on to the whole catalog.

What happens when you convert

Step by step

  1. Open Apps › IFG WebP Image Optimizer › Images and click the image’s name. To find it faster, use the To convert filter.

What you’ll see: the image’s page with the Convert to WebP box, which explains what will happen, and the button Convert to WebP.

  2. Check Where it’s used, further down on the same page: these are the places that will change.
  3. Don’t edit the products and content that use this image until the conversion is finished.

Warning: after the click, customers see the WebP file in every place listed. On the Free plan a successful conversion uses one of the 100 available. You can always undo, and undoing gives it back.

  4. Press Convert to WebP.

What you’ll see: the button shows it’s loading and Shopify’s bar moves at the top. At the end “Done: the image is now WebP.” appears, the status becomes Converted with the line “Products and content updated: N”, the link Open the WebP file and the button Undo conversion.

  5. Press Open the WebP file if you want to see the new file. It opens in a new tab.

Messages you may see

Message What it means and what to do
“Done: the image is now WebP.” All good.
“This image is already WebP: there is nothing to convert.” Nothing to do.
“This image is already being worked on. Wait a moment and reload the page.” A conversion of the same image has already started, for example from “Convert all”. Wait and reload.
“The conversion was interrupted. Try again: what is already done is not done again.” One step didn’t succeed. Press the button again.
“You have reached your plan’s conversion limit (100).” The Free plan’s conversions are used up. Press See plans to move to Unlimited.
“This image cannot be converted: …” The reason follows the colon: file larger than 20 MB, image too large, format not supported, or an error reported by Shopify.
“This image is not in the inventory: run the scan again and retry.” Go back to the Overview, press Update the scan and try again.
“We can’t read your plan right now, so nothing was converted. Try again in a moment.” Shopify didn’t answer about the plan. Nothing was touched. Try again in a few minutes.
“The conversion stopped after three attempts. Nothing was undone automatically.” See “If something goes wrong” below.

If something goes wrong

The button says “Resume the conversion” and the page says “The conversion stopped halfway”. The previous conversion didn’t reach the end. Press Resume the conversion: the steps already done are not done again.

“Conversion stopped” appears and the button says “Try again”. After three attempts the app stopped and undid nothing on its own. Press Try again. If it stops again, write to support with the file name.

I don’t see the “Convert to WebP” box. The image is Already WebP: there’s nothing to convert.
