Before you start

You must be able to install apps in the store. If you’re not sure, read Before you start.

Install the app

  1. Open the Shopify App Store and search for IFG WebP Image Optimizer.
  2. Open the app’s listing and press the button to install it.

What you’ll see: Shopify shows the list of permissions the app asks for.

  3. Check the permissions and confirm the installation.

What you’ll see: the app opens inside the Shopify Admin with the title “Welcome to IFG WebP Image Optimizer”, the sentence “Four steps, a couple of minutes.” and the line “Step 1 of 4” with four labels: Language, Terms, Settings, Plan.

The permissions are for this: reading and creating files in your image library; updating products, pages, blog articles and collection descriptions so they point at the new images instead of the old ones; reading your theme, without changing it, to tell you which images it uses. The app does not ask for access to customers or orders.

Tip: until you finish the setup, the app shows only these four steps. Plans and Support can be opened too; any other page brings you back here.

Step 1 of 4: Language

The screen is titled “Which language do you want to use the app in?”. The language you pick applies to the app only: your store’s language doesn’t change.

  1. Open the App language menu. It starts on Automatic (Shopify account language): the app uses the language of your Shopify account, or English if that language isn’t available.
  2. Pick a language: Italiano, English, Deutsch, Français, Español or Português. If the automatic choice suits you, skip to step 4.
  3. Press Save language. The button stays grey until you change the choice.

What you’ll see: the message “Settings saved.” and the app’s text in the language you picked.

  4. Read the box “What we need to be able to do”: it repeats which permissions the app uses and why.
  5. Press Continue.

What you’ll see: “Step 2 of 4” and the Terms screen.

Warning: Continue does not save the language. If you changed it, press Save language first.

Step 2 of 4: Terms

The screen says “Worth reading once.” and repeats the main rule: “The original image is never deleted.”

  1. Open Terms of service and read them. They open in a new browser tab.
  2. Go back to the app, open Privacy policy and read it.
  3. Tick the box “I have read and accept the Terms of service and the Privacy policy.”.
  4. Press Continue. The button is active only after you tick the box.

What you’ll see: “Step 3 of 4” and the screen “How you want us to work”.

If you close the app after accepting, next time you start again from step 3: your acceptance stays recorded.

Step 3 of 4: Settings

The screen is titled “How you want us to work” and says “All optional, and changeable later from Settings.”. If you don’t know what to choose, leave everything as it is and press Continue.

  1. Look at the WebP quality of photos field. It starts at 90, the value we measured: photos that look the same as the original. You can type a whole number from 60 to 100. Lower means lighter files and softer detail.
  2. Look at the Photographic PNGs: allow lossy compression switch. It starts on: a PNG that is really a photo becomes a lighter WebP when it stays visually faithful. Off, every PNG stays lossless. Logos and drawings are always lossless.
  3. If you changed something, press Save settings.

What you’ll see: the message “Settings saved.”.

  4. Press Continue.

What you’ll see: “Step 4 of 4” and the screen “Choose your plan”, with two boxes: Free and Unlimited.

These choices apply to future conversions. The page All settings explains each one.

Step 4 of 4: Plan

The two boxes show:

Below is the list “Included in all plans”: the features are the same, only how many images you can convert changes.

To start for free

  1. Press Start with the free plan in the Free box.

What you’ll see: the setup closes and the app’s Overview opens.

To choose Unlimited

Warning: Unlimited is paid. After the free trial Shopify charges the plan on the store’s bill. The trial applies once per store: if you’ve already used it, the charge starts right away.

  1. Press Choose the plan on Shopify in the Unlimited box.

What you’ll see: Shopify’s plan page, inside the Admin.

  2. Choose Unlimited, monthly or annual, and approve on Shopify’s page.

What you’ll see: you’re back in the app, the setup closes by itself and the Overview opens.

If the store already has Unlimited (for example after reinstalling), the Unlimited box carries the label Current plan and the button is Continue with Unlimited: press it and the Overview opens.

If something goes wrong

“We couldn’t record your acceptance. Try again.” The tick wasn’t saved. Press Continue again. If the message comes back, reload the page.

“We couldn’t finish the setup. Try again.” Press the plan button again. If the message comes back, write to support.

I approved Unlimited but I still see the setup. Open the app again from Shopify Admin › Apps › IFG WebP Image Optimizer. At step 4 the Unlimited box says Current plan: press Continue with Unlimited.

I opened another page of the app and ended up back in the setup. That’s expected: until you choose a plan, the app opens only the setup, Plans and Support.
