What you need
- A Shopify store whose Admin you can sign in to.
- Permission to install apps. The store owner has it. A staff member has it only if the owner granted it. If you’re not sure, ask the owner.
- Nothing else. No separate account, no new password, no files to prepare. The app works on the images already in your Shopify Files library.
Which images it converts
- JPG, PNG, GIF files (animated ones too: every frame is kept) and AVIF.
- Images that are already WebP are not touched: the app marks them Already WebP.
- A file over 20 MB is not converted.
- An image over 80 megapixels for a JPEG, or over 40 megapixels in other formats, is not converted.
- A photo over 4472 pixels on a side or 20 megapixels is not skipped: the app scales it down to Shopify’s limits and keeps its proportions.
Where the new images go
After the conversion these move to the WebP file:
- the product gallery, in the same position;
- the variant images;
- the images written in the text of product descriptions, pages, blog articles and collection descriptions.
What the app does not do
- It never deletes the original file. It stays in the Files library at its own address, so a feed, another app or an old link that uses it keeps working.
- It does not edit your theme. Images chosen directly in the theme stay on the original file, which keeps working. The app shows them to you but does not move them.
- It does not move cover images of collections and articles: they stay on the original.
- It does not convert images you upload later on its own. To convert them, run the scan again and then the conversion.
- It does not work in the background. “Convert all” runs only while its page stays open.
- It does not promise a faster store. The app tells you how many images are WebP, nothing more.
- It does not read customers or orders. It has no permission to.
