IFG eCommerce IFG WebP Image Optimizerby IFG eCommerce®

This app is not yet published on the Shopify App Store. This guide describes the version in development and may change before launch.

Frequently asked questions

Does the app delete my original images?

No, never. For each image it creates a new .webp file next to the original and moves the references it can reach onto it. The original stays in Shopify's Files library at its own address, so anything that still points to it keeps working.

What is moved to the WebP file?

The product gallery, variant images and images written in the text of product descriptions, pages, blog articles and collection descriptions. Images chosen directly in the theme, and the cover images of collections and articles, stay on the original file for now, which keeps working.

Does converting change how my store loads?

We don't promise better loading times. Shopify already serves optimized formats for resized images; this app converts the stored files, and on the stores we measured image weight drops by a few percent. The app tells you how many images are WebP, nothing more.

Can I undo?

Yes, whenever you want, from each image's page. Products go back to the original file, descriptions go back word for word, and the conversion is given back to your plan count.

How many images can I convert?

100 images in total on the Free plan. No cap on Unlimited. Only successful conversions count: a failed or undone attempt uses nothing.

Do I need to keep the page open during "Convert all"?

Yes. Conversion goes one image at a time while the page is open. If you close it, you pick up where you left off: what is done is not done again.

Why isn't an image converted?

Because it is already WebP, it is over 20 MB, it is too large to scale down safely (over 80 megapixels for JPEG, 40 for other formats), its format is not supported, or Shopify reports an error on the file. The image's page says which. Photos over 4472 pixels on a side or 20 megapixels are not skipped: we scale them down to Shopify's limits, proportions kept.

What happens if I uninstall the app?

Your images stay as they are: converted ones keep using the WebP file and the originals stay in the library. If you want the originals back, undo before uninstalling. The app's data about your store is erased when Shopify sends the deletion request, 48 hours after uninstall.

What data do you keep?

Only image data: file name, address, where it is used and the conversion history. No customer or order data: the app has no permission to read them.
