Before you start

You need to be able to log in to your store’s Admin as the owner or as a staff member allowed to install apps. Keep your returns, shipping and company details at hand: the list is in Before you start.

Install the app

  1. Open the Shopify App Store and search for IFG GEO Optimizer.
  2. On the app’s page, press the button to install it.

What you’ll see: Shopify shows you the list of permissions the app asks for.

  3. Review the permissions and confirm the installation. What the app asks for and why:
    • products (read and write): to audit them and to save the data, FAQs and descriptions you approve;
    • theme (read and write): to check that the GEO Schema block is active and to write the files for AI agents to your theme when you ask;
    • pixels and customer events: to count, anonymously, visits that come from an AI assistant;
    • files, store pages and articles, orders (read-only for pages, articles and orders): for the checks on your store’s content.

What you’ll see: the app opens inside the Shopify Admin. For a moment you see “Loading the app…”, then the guided setup starts.

The guided setup has 5 steps. At the top there are five tiles, Introduction, Policies, Company, Theme and Plan, each marked “Done”, “In progress” or “To do”. Below them you see “Step 1 of 5”.

Tip: if you close the app halfway, when you reopen it in the same browser you pick up from the step where you were, with what you had already typed.

Step 1 of 5: language

The screen is titled “Make your catalog readable for AI assistants”.

  1. Open the Interface language menu. The first option, Automatic (Shopify account language), uses your Shopify account language. Leave it, or pick one of the 30 languages.

What you’ll see: the app’s menus and buttons switch language straight away. Your store and product texts don’t change.

  2. Press Get started.

Step 2 of 5: return and shipping policy

The screen is titled “Return & shipping policy”. This information ends up on every product page, in a format AI engines read: it helps them answer questions like “can I return it?” or “when will it arrive?”. Every field is optional.

If the app found information in your store, a blue box at the top tells you, and next to the filled-in fields you see “From your store” or “Check this”. The Use the default values button clears the fields the app filled in.

  1. In Return window (days), type how many days customers have to request a return, for example 14 or 30.
  2. In Who pays return costs, choose Free returns or Customer pays.
  3. In Order handling days, type the days between the order and handing the parcel to the carrier, for example 1.
  4. In Shipping transit days, type the days the parcel travels, for example 3.
  5. In How shipping is priced, choose the option that matches what customers actually pay: Always free, One flat rate, Free above a threshold, Varies by destination, order value or weight or Calculated at checkout by the carrier.

What you’ll see: with One flat rate the Flat shipping rate field appears. With Free above a threshold, Flat shipping rate and Free shipping from appear. With the last two options a box explains that no amount will be published, because there is no single price valid for every order.

  6. If it appeared, fill in Flat shipping rate (for example 5.90) and, if shown, Free shipping from (for example 50).
  7. In Main shipping destination, choose the country you ship to most.
  8. Press Continue.

Warning: the return window can’t be shorter than 14 days. With a lower number you see “EU law requires a minimum 14-day right of withdrawal — you can’t set a shorter period.” and Continue stays grey until you fix it.

Step 3 of 5: company details

The screen is titled “Company details”. This information describes your company in a standard format (the same one Google uses to recognise a real business). Every field is optional. Above the fields there is the reminder “VAT number and business register number aren’t available from Shopify, so those two are the only ones you have to type in yourself.”

  1. In What your store does, write one or two plain sentences about what you sell, for example “We make and sell lightweight hiking backpacks, handmade in Italy.”.
  2. In Legal business name, type your full legal name, for example “Rossi Fashion S.r.l.”.
  3. In VAT number, type your VAT number with the country prefix, for example IT12345678901.
  4. In Business registry number, type your company’s business register number.
  5. In Business address, type the address on one line, as on a parcel: street, postcode, city and country.
  6. Under Social profiles, paste the links to your profiles: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile, X (Twitter), TikTok, YouTube. In Other links you can add other links, one per line.
  7. Press Continue. If you’d rather fill this in later, press Skip for now.

Tip: if a red warning appears under What your store does, the text looks damaged (part of it repeats, or it contains other details). Rewrite it as one simple sentence: until you do, it isn’t used in the files for AI agents.

Step 4 of 5: turn on GEO Schema in your theme

The screen is titled “Turn on GEO Schema in your theme”. This is the most important step: without the GEO Schema block active, the information you entered so far doesn’t appear on your store pages.

  1. Press Open theme editor ↗.

What you’ll see: Shopify’s theme editor opens in a new browser tab, on the apps panel.

  2. In the left sidebar, find GEO Schema under app embeds and switch it on.
  3. Press Save at the top right of the theme editor.
  4. Go back to the app’s tab and press Check activation.

What you’ll see: a green box saying “Active — your store is ready for AI search engines.”. If the box is yellow, the block isn’t active yet in the published theme: repeat steps 2 and 3 and check again.

  5. Press Continue.

Note: you can also press Continue without turning on the block and do it later. There’s a reminder on the Catalog audit page.

Step 5 of 5: choose your plan

The screen is titled “Choose your plan”. You see three cards, Free, Grow and Unlimited, with the price, the features included and, for paid plans, a line about the free trial. At the top, the Monthly / Annual switch changes the prices between monthly and yearly. Below the cards is the full comparison table. Details are in Plans and billing.

  1. Choose Monthly or Annual.
  2. Press the button of the plan you want: Start with Free, Choose Grow or Choose Unlimited.

Warning: Grow and Unlimited are paid plans. After the button, Shopify’s page opens where you approve the subscription: there you see the price and the free trial days you are entitled to, and nothing is charged until you approve.

What you’ll see: with Free, “Setup complete! Opening your Overview…” appears and the Overview opens a moment later. With Grow or Unlimited, after approving on Shopify you return to the app with the new plan active.

Your setup is saved before you go to Shopify. If you don’t approve the subscription, you come back to the app with the setup complete and the Free plan: you can switch plan whenever you like from Plans.

If something goes wrong

I can’t see the button to install the app. Your account isn’t allowed to install apps. Ask the store owner.

Continue stays grey in step 2. A field has an invalid value: look for the red message under the field. The most common case is a return window under 14 days.

After Check activation I see “Couldn’t check right now — try again shortly, or continue and check later from the Catalog audit page.” The app couldn’t read your theme at that moment. Wait a few seconds and try again, or continue and check later from Catalog audit.

The box stays yellow even though I turned on GEO Schema. Usually the theme editor wasn’t saved, or you turned on the block in a theme that isn’t the published one. The check only looks at the published theme.

After choosing Grow or Unlimited I see “Couldn’t start the subscription right now — try again, or start with Free and upgrade later from the Plans page.” Shopify didn’t start the subscription. Try again; if it happens again, choose Start with Free and switch to a paid plan later from Plans.
