Before you start
You have an active box and the builder is in your theme: see Publishing a box and Adding the builder to your theme. To try it yourself, open the box with View in store from its page in the app.
The builder’s texts follow your store language. The English ones are below.
The builder, top to bottom
- Title and description of the box. If you haven’t set them, the title is “Build your box” and the description “Choose 3 products and make it yours.” (with your number of items).
- The box summary: the slots to fill (“Your box”), the count (for example “0 of 3”), the fixed box price and the main button. On mobile the summary stays docked at the bottom while the customer scrolls through the products.
- The products you allowed, in cards with image, name and price. With more than 6 products, Search products and Sort appear above the cards (Featured, Price, low to high, Price, high to low, Name, A–Z).
How the customer builds the box
-
The customer selects Add to box under a product. If the product has several variants (for example sizes or colours), they first pick the variant on the card.
What you’ll see: the card is highlighted with the accent colour and its button says “In your box ✓”. One summary slot fills up and the count goes up, for example “1 of 3”.
- If Max per variant is above 1, the card shows buttons to add or remove one, and a label such as “2 in box”. At the limit it shows “Max 2 per item”.
- The main button says what is missing: “Choose 2 more”. With collection rules it says for example “Choose 1 from Creams” or “Complete the categories”.
- When the box is complete, the button becomes Add box to cart. When the box is full, the other cards show “Your box is full”.
-
The customer selects Add box to cart.
What you’ll see: the button says “Adding…”, then the cart page opens.
To start over, the customer selects Clear in the summary. Sold-out products show “Sold out” and can’t be chosen; the others stay available.
If Show the value and saving is on in the block, a line such as “Value $95.00 · You save $25.00” appears next to the price: the total of the chosen products’ prices and the difference from the box price. It only appears when the saving is above zero.
In the cart and at checkout
- The box is one cart line with the box name and its fixed price.
- Shopify checks the box again against the rules you saved: allowed products, minimum and maximum, quantity per variant, collection rules and whether the box is published. If something doesn’t match, the box doesn’t go into the cart.
- If the fixed price can’t be applied, checkout stops instead of charging a wrong price.
- The customer can buy several boxes in the same order: each is a separate line with its own products and price.
- A Shopify discount code that applies to the box product works as a separate promotion on the box price. The app doesn’t create or change discount codes.
Warning: each box line has quantity 1. If the customer raises a box’s quantity in the cart, Shopify can’t apply it and checkout doesn’t continue. To buy two boxes, the customer builds two in the builder.
In the order
The order contains the real products the customer chose. Inventory and fulfillment work as if the customer had bought them one by one: stock goes down for those products and those products are shipped.
Troubleshooting
The customer sees “This box was changed or is no longer available for this selection”. You changed the box (products or rules) after the customer opened the page, or the box was moved to draft. The customer needs to reload the page and choose again.
The customer sees “The box could not be added. Check your selection and try again.” A temporary error while adding. Trying again is usually enough; if it keeps happening, check in Settings that Fixed-price engine is fine.
A product doesn’t appear in the builder. It was removed from the collection or the box, or it was added to the collection after the last save. Open the box in the app and save it again: see Refreshing a collection’s products.
